 <head>Biographical Note</head> 
 <p>Allen Weir Freeman was a physician and Johns Hopkins University of Public Health Administration.  He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1881 and was brother of the author, Douglas Southall Freeman. </p><p>Freeman received his M.D. from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1905. He practiced medicine in Richmond, Virginia, and was appointed Commissioner of Health for the state in 1908.  In 1912, he joined the U.S. Public Health Service, and in 1917 he was appointed Commissioner of Health for Ohio.</p><p>In 1921, he returned to Hopkins to teach in the School of Hygiene and Public Health.  In 1946, he published Five Million Patients, his description of his work and teaching experiences in the field of public health.</p>
