The collection consists of three
series: research material, writings, and course lecture notes. The research
notes and course material are the strongest part of the collection. Much of
Painter's research focused on the political and social history of medieval
England. Painter compiled information from various primary sources, including
pipe rolls and the Domesday Book, to support his work on the Middle Ages.
<lb/><lb/>The information Painter abstracted from the sources is primarily in
list form. It would be difficult to use the material as a starting point for
original research, but it might be used in conjunction with an already
well-developed project. <lb/><lb/>Painter taught English and medieval history.
The course lecture notes, most in outline form, represent his methodology.
<lb/><lb/>The writings series contains only four items, two of which may be
chapters from his works: typescripts on Richard III and the Crusades. There is
also a typescript of an unpublished short story, set during the reign of King
John, which skillfully combines fact and fiction.

		  <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Sidney Painter was born in New York in 1902, the son of Henry
McMahon and Carrie Stevens Painter. He attended the Taft School in Watertown,
Connecticut, and received his B. A. from Yale in 1925. His Ph.D., also from
Yale, was granted in 1930. Painter remained at Yale for one year as assistant
professor of history, then joined the Hopkins faculty in 1931. In 1945, he was
promoted to full professor and appointed department chairman. He held the
chairmanship until his death in 1960. </p>
<p>Painter's research focused on the political and social history of
medieval England. His works included A History of the English Feudal Barony,
The Reign of King John, The Rise of Feudal Monarchies, Medieval Society, and A
History of the Middle Ages. </p>
<p>Painter died suddenly of a heart attack in January 1960. He was
survived by his wife, Nivea Forbes Painter, and four daughters: Mrs. John
Mathews, Ann Forbes Painter, Julie Elizabeth Painter, and Prudence Steel
			 Painter. </p>

<p>This material is undated, but was most likely compiled by Painter
in the 1940s-1950s. The notes are arranged alphabetically by Painter's file
folder headings; in those instances where the material was untitled, it has
been filed under "Research Material." </p>
<p>Painter recycled his paper. On the back of some of the research
sheets are drafts of portions of his writings. No entire work is represented,
but often the draft relates to the research notes it is with. This gives a
slight indication of how Painter used his sources. </p>
