	<abstract label="Scope and Content Note" encodinganalog="520$a">The collection consists of clippings of Baltimore newspapers from 1859, and correspondence relating to rare books. Letters concern the purchase of the Historia Romana (Appianus, 1477) by Machen's father,  Arthur Webster Machen in 1909, and Thomas Machen's interest in finding a binder in 1945.<lb/>A biographicl sketch (six page typescript) of Maryland colonial settler, Margaret Brent, is the final item in the collection.</abstract>

 <p>Thomas Gresham Machen was an architect and book collector.  He was born in Baltimore in 1886, the son of Minnie Gresham and Arthur Webster Machen. He received his B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University in 1906, and later attended M.I.T. and Cornell.</p>
