	<abstract label="Scope and Content Note" encodinganalog="520$a">The collection consists of Grace Turnbull's correspondence with British writers, 1933-1935.  Of interest are the letters of Stephen Mackenna with whom Miss Turnbull consulted while she was writing <emph render="bold">The Essence of Plotinus</emph>.  Her work is based on Mackenna's translation of Plotinus.  Her other correspondents included William Ralph Inge, G.W. Russell, Sir John Collings Squire, and Evelyn Underhill.</abstract>

 <head>Biographical Note</head> 
 <p>Grace Turnbull was a sculptor, painter, and author. She was born in Baltimore on December 31, 1880.  She studied at the Maryland Institute of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later exhibited her work in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.</p><p>Mis Turnbull also published several books, including <emph render="bold">Tongues of Fire</emph> (1928), <emph render="bold">The Essence of Plotinus</emph> (1934), and <emph render="bold">The Uncovered Well</emph> (1952).  She died in Baltimore in 1974.</p>
