		<abstract label="Scope and Content Note">This record group, spanning the
		  years 1949 to 1985, consists principally of the records of two Deans of
		  Undergraduate and Graduate Studies: Michael K. Hooker, who served from 1978 to
		  1982, and Lucien M. Brush, who served from 1982 until the office was abolished
		  in 1985. The record group is divided into two series: (1) Academic Records; and
		  (2) Student Services Records. The first series consists primarily of memoranda,
		  correspondence and meeting agendas, relating to the deans' major responsibility
		  for academic standing and integrity at Johns Hopkins. The second series
		  contains records of Brush, of Joseph S. "Jakie" Hall, Dean of Academic
		  Services, and of Hall's assistant Anita Prentice. These records include
		  correspondence, memoranda and reports relating to various functions which Brush
		  assumed responsibility when Hall became Senior Assistant to the President and
		  the position of Dean of Academic Services was abolished. </abstract>

		  <head>History</head> 
		  <p>In late 1970, George Benton, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and
			 Sciences, reorganized the administration at Homewood. Robert Strider was
			 appointed to the new position of Dean of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies,
			 reporting to Benton, and was given authority over degree programs and the area
			 of student services. In the spring of 1971, Strider began to search for a
			 replacement for Carl Swanson, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, who
			 had announced his resignation. This search culminated in the appointment of
			 Sigmund Suskind, a professor of molecular biology. Suskind's appointment was
			 viewed as controversial, with students arguing that the appointment committee
			 had merely "rubber-stamped" Benton's selection, and had not sought input from
			 students or the remainder of the University community. </p> 
		  <p>In September 1971, just as Suskind was about to assume his position,
			 Strider died. Suskind assumed Strider's duties, but the name of the office was
			 changed to Dean of Academic Programs and the position of Associate Dean of
			 Undergraduate Studies was eliminated. Suskind remained Dean of Academic
			 Programs until February 1975, when, upon his request, his title was changed to
			 Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. His duties, however, remained the
			 same. </p> 
		  <p>Three years later, in 1978, the deans' offices again underwent a
			 major reorganization after the Board of Trustees formally reestablished the
			 School of Engineering. George Owen, appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts and
			 Sciences in 1972, became Dean of Homewood Faculties, respon-sible for the
			 Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, as well as all of the support
			 services at Homewood. Suskind was promoted to Dean of Arts and Sciences, and
			 Michael Hooker, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, who had been made Assistant
			 Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies in 1977, became Associate Dean of
			 Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. Hooker's responsibilities were to supervise
			 matters relating to academic standing and integrity, including the supervision
			 of the Office of Advising and Counseling, and to chair the Committee on
			 Undergraduate Studies and the Graduate Board. </p> 
		  <p>In 1980, Hooker was promoted from associate to full dean, but
			 otherwise his duties remained the same until 1982, when he left Hopkins to
			 become President of Bennington College. At the same time, Owen retired as Dean
			 of Homewood Faculties, and Jakie Hall, Dean of Academic Services, was appointed
			 Senior Assistant to President Muller. Thus, it was decided to reorganize the
			 administrative structure once again. The position of Dean of Homewood Faculties
			 was abolished; henceforth, the Deans of Arts and Sciences and Engineering would
			 report directly to the President and Provost. Reporting to both of these deans
			 were two associate deans. Lucien Brush, the new Associate Dean of Undergraduate
			 and Graduate Studies, assumed all of Hooker's old responsibilities.
			 Additionally, the Assistant Dean of Students, Chris Colombo, who was
			 responsible for the Athletic Center, the Chaplain's Office, Military Science,
			 Residential Life, Student Activities and WJHU, and who had formerly reported to
			 Hall, now reported to Brush, Hall's position having been eliminated. Hall's
			 other duties fell to C. Norman Krueger, appointed to the new position of
			 Associate Dean of Administration. </p> 
		  <p>In 1984, another shift in responsibilities occurred when Colombo
			 became an associate dean, on the same level as Brush and Krueger; all of the
			 offices which had reported to Brush through him became Colombo's responsibility
			 alone. At the same time, Brush gained responsibility for the Offices of
			 Admissions and Financial Aid, both of which had been Krueger's. </p> 
		  <p>In 1985, the Office of Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate
			 Studies was eliminated as part of yet another reorganization. Robert Welch, the
			 newly appointed Dean of Homewood Schools Adminis-tration, assumed
			 responsibility for all of Brush's offices as well as becoming Krueger's and
			 Colombo's immediate superior. </p> 
		  <p>In early 1988, Welch resigned from his position and left the
			 University; he was replaced by Chris Colombo, as Dean of Homewood Schools
			 Services. </p>

			 <p>Contains the records of Sigmund Suskind, Michael Hooker and Lucien
				Brush relating to their responsibility for supervising and maintaining academic
				standing and integrity at Homewood. Records pertaining to the deans' other
				major duty, that of chairing the Committee on Undergraduate Studies, consisting
				of a complete set of the minutes and supporting papers of that body, were
				removed from this record group and added to the records of the Academic
				Governing Boards. Also included in this series are some records of Sigmund
				Suskind, who preceded Hooker and Brush in a similar position, relating
				primarily to the Honor Commission and the question of whether credit should be
				granted for classes in military science. Additionally, there are some of
				Brush's records relating to his work as a professor and as a private
				consultant. The series consists of subject files arranged alphabetically by
				file title, spanning the period 1949 to 1985, with most of the material dating
				from the late 1970s and early 1980s. </p>
