Eisenhower Library, The Johns Hopkins University 0.5 cubic foot (1.5 document cases) English The records of the Department of Anthropology span the years 1974 to 1984; most of the documents, however, date from 1974 to 1980, and are divided into four series: (1) Administrative Records, 1974-1984; (2) Faculty and Staff, 1974-1984; (3) Student Records, 1974-1981; and (4) NEH Fellows, 1975-1978. Series 3 is further divided into three subseries: Graduate Students, Undergraduate Students and Special Students. Consisting primarily of correspondence, appointment letters, faculty resumes, and student transcripts, this record group is very limited in scope, with series 1 and 4 filed in one folder each. Although incomplete, these records help document the history of the Department of Anthropology in the first thirteen years of its existence. Administrative Information Provenance

History

One of the youngest departments of the School of Arts and Sciences of the Johns Hopkins University, the Department of Anthropology was established in 1975 and began operations in September of that year, assisted by a five-year grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. In its earliest years, the Department had only three full-time faculty members and four or five visiting professors each year. Only a small number of students were admitted into its Ph.D. and B.A. degree programs. Since the Department's inception, its focus has been on social and cultural anthropology, with physical anthropology and archaeology excluded.

 Description of Series/Container List Administrative Records Administrative Records, 1974-1984

Series 1, Administrative Records, covers the years 1974 to 1984 and consists of one folder containing course rosters and correspondence between the Department chairmen and the Deans of Arts and Sciences regarding the course establishment for the new Department. There is also some correspondence with other departments of the University, such as the Department of History, discussing cooperation in course offerings.

Series 2, Faculty and Staff, spans the period 1974 to 1984. This series consists of correspondence, appointment letters and curriculum vitaes. With a few exceptions, the series includes only part-time and temporary faculty appointments. Each year the department invites one or more outside scholars to offer courses for one or two semesters. The records are arranged alphabetically by the name of the faculty or staff member. Within each folder, records are arranged chronologically.

Series 3, Student Records, includes three subseries: (1) Graduate Students; (2) Undergraduate Students; and (3) Special Students.
