History

The Advisory Committee on Bachelor of Science in Education for the
Evening College and Summer Session was created in 1915 for the purpose of
establishing requirements and recommending degree candidates for students in
the University's part-time programs. In response to demands from part-time and
summer students, the Board of Trustees decided to offer the Bachelor of Science
in Education degree to students who successfully finished their College Courses
for Teachers or Summer Session program. The Advisory Committee, composed of
administrators and faculty members, was created to supervise regulations and
procedures for awarding degrees. In 1916, two additional evening programs were
added: Courses in Business Economics and Night Courses for Technical Workers.
Although the three evening programs were administered separately, the Advisory
Committee governed the granting of degrees for all three, plus Summer
Session.

The president of the University, as chairman of the Advisory
Committee, usually presided over the meetings, which took place three to four
times per year. The director of the College for Teachers served as secretary
and was responsible for carrying out the Advisory Committee's resolutions.
Edward F. Buchner was secretary from 1915 to 1929, and was succeeded by
Florence E. Bamberger, who served from 1930 to 1946. In 1947, the Advisory
Committee was discontinued due to the consolidation of the three evening
programs under McCoy College.
