History

The Night Courses for Technical Workers, one of the part-time
education programs offered by The Johns Hopkins University, were first
introduced in 1916, when the demand for workers with technical education soared
just prior to the entry of the United States into the First World War. Judged a
success during the war, the program continued to grow in post-war years; by
1923 there were 311 students registered, 431 by 1926. The program offered a
variety of courses in engineering and other practical science fields, taught by
members of the full- time engineering faculty. The curriculum underwent
extensive changes through the years in order to meet the specific needs of
students, and, in 1931, the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering was
approved by the Board of Trustees, to be conferred upon those students who
finished the full program. In 1937 the requirements for the degree were
modified and six distinct curricula in the various branches of engineering were
established.

In 1939, the Maryland Legislature enacted a law governing the
professional practice of engineering, which ultimately led to the incorporation
of the Night Courses for Technical Workers into the School of Engineering.
Prior to 1939 the Night Courses were supervised by a committee of four to five
professors, headed by Alexander G. Christie, under the jurisdiction of the
College for Teachers. When the change in jurisdiction took place, course and
degree requirements were standardized with those for full-time engineering
students. To this day, engineering remains the only area of study at Homewood,
outside of the School of Continuing Studies, where a student can attend classes
leading to a degree on a part-time basis.
