When the University started the Engineering School, with financial
assistance from the State of Maryland, the trustees agreed to admit 129
Maryland students on scholarships with state funds. Thus the Scholarship
Committee met to decide how the scholarship money should be allocated. In the
minutes of the Board of Engineering Studies, 3 November 1921, "Dean Whitehead
appointed a committee on materials for scholarship students." The committee
decided how much scholarship money each individual student would get, and which
students would get special scholarships, such as the Gilman Scholarship,
University Scholarships, and corporate scholarships (such as Linde Air
Products, Heyden Chemical Corporation).
