		  Advisory Council to the School of Advanced International Studies, which
		  includes committees on Academic Planning, Development and Finance, and the
		  Visiting Committees. The records date from 1958 to 1992 and are arranged in
		  three series: (1) Meetings, 1963-1992; (2) Committees, 1959-1991; and (3)
		  Administrative Records, 1958-1973. The record group contains minutes,
		  correspondence, reports, budgetary records and memoranda. In general, the
		  subjects treated in the record group fall under the headings of the committees:
		  Academic Program, Finance and Development, and the Visiting Committees, with

		  <head>History</head> 
		  <p>An advisory body to the School of Advanced International Studies
			 (SAIS) was established when the school itself was established in 1943. Although
			 several names were used for this body over the years, its functions were
			 essentially the same and its membership was continuous. In 1958, the duties of
			 the Academic Board and of the Advisory Council were formally defined in a
			 letter dated January 23, 1958, from President Milton S. Eisenhower to SAIS Dean
			 Philip W. Thayer: <lb/>The Academic Board of the School of Advanced
			 International Studies is the advisory group of the school which gives critical
			 and continuing attention to educational matters, and, when necessary, submits
			 recommendations to the President of the University for his approval or for
			 final action by the Board of Trustees. These matters will include maintenance
			 of University academic standards, changes in the academic program, appointments
			 to the academic staff, academic promotions and questions of educational policy.
			 The Board should meet at least twice each semester, and oftener on the call of
			 the Chairman. The Advisory Council to the School of Advanced International
			 Studies (whose membership is the same as that of the Foreign Service
			 Educational Foundation) advises the Dean of the School and the President of the
			 University on administrative matters including fiscal, organizational, public
			 relations, and related problems. </p> 
		  <p>Many of the members of the Advisory Council were prominent figures
			 in government, including members of the United States Congress and the Cabinet.
			 A few of the more illustrious members of the Advisory Council include: Dean G.
			 Acheson, Secretary of State from 1949 to 1953; Christian A. Herter, Secretary
			 of State from 1959 to 1961; William P. Rogers, Secretary of State from 1969 to
			 1973; and Frances P. Bolton, U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1940 to
			 1968.</p>
