1956 to 1958, although there are a few records of Professor Robert A. Lystad as
well as materials which pre-date the establishment of a formal African Studies

African Studies, its academic program, and Professor McKay's involvement with
professional activities in the field of African studies. The record group is
divided into three series: (1) Administrative Records, 1952-1978; (2)

History

When the School of Advanced International Studies affiliated with
the Johns Hopkins University in 1950, only one course in African history was
offered. In the fall of 1952, the School decided to take the first step toward
systematic work in the African field by offering "The Background of Modern
Africa," taught by Dr. Vernon McKay, who was an officer of the Department of
State dealing with African matters. The student response demonstrated the need
for additional work and, in 1954 and 1955, Harold Cooper, a retired officer in
the British Colonial Service, offered "Political Problems of Contemporary
Africa" and "The British Commonwealth." In 1954, S.A.I.S. offered an eight-week
summer session on Africa for forty-four graduate students and a one-week
conference on Africa attended by 303 representatives of academia, government
and business.

In September 1956, Vernon McKay, who had taught "Africa in
Contemporary Politics" in the 1954 session, joined the faculty full-time and
organized the Program of African Studies, which began a year later. Professor
McKay was the only full-time faculty member in African Studies until Dr. Robert
A. Lystad joined him in September 1961. Harlan Robinson, Assistant Professor of
Comparative Politics, was added to the Program's faculty in 1969. Despite the
small size of the full-time faculty, the African Studies Program has remained
academically strong over the years due to the participation of distinguished
visiting faculty from other universities, government agencies, and
international organizations. Among the faculty have been historians, political
scientists, sociologists, anthropologists and economists offering courses in
history, governments, politics, economics, foreign policy and development of
the African continent. The Program has also drawn upon Washington's wide and
varied resources by inviting government dignitaries and other specialists in
African affairs to present papers at conferences sponsored by the School of
Advanced International Studies and to address graduate seminars.
